1-Day Bhubaneswar Itinerary – The Temple Circuit
- 7:00 AMLingaraj Temple — Start with the city?s spiritual centre before the crowds arrive. Non-Hindu visitors should head to the viewing platform outside. Hindu visitors can join the mangala arati at dawn.
- 9:00 AMWalk to Bindu Sagar tank — stroll around the sacred lake, visit the Ananta Vasudeva Temple on its northern bank (open to all religions).
- 10:30 AMMukteshvara Temple and Rajarani Temple — two masterworks of Kalinga architecture within 500 metres of each other. Rajarani is open to all visitors regardless of religion.
- 12:30 PMLunch at a restaurant in the Rajpath or Janpath area. Try Pakhala bhata (fermented rice) and Machha Jhola (fish curry).
- 2:00 PMUdayagiri & Khandagiri Caves — Allow 1.5 hours. Climb Khandagiri hill for panoramic views over the city. The 2nd-century BCE Jain inscriptions here are some of Odisha's oldest archaeological treasures.
- 4:30 PMDhauli Peace Pagoda — 8 km from the city. Spend an hour at the shanti stupa and Ashokan Rock Edicts. The reflective hilltop setting above the Daya River is especially moving at dusk.
- 7:00 PMDinner at Swosti Premium or any of the restaurants along Janpath Road. If you have an early morning train to Puri, pack your bags tonight for a smooth departure.
2-Day Bhubaneswar Itinerary
Follow the 1-day itinerary above for Day 1, then dedicate Day 2 to Bhubaneswar?s lesser-known but equally rewarding attractions:
- 8:30 AMOdisha State Museum — One of India's best regional museums. The tribal gallery alone is worth 2 hours. Natural history, Buddhist relics and antique palm-leaf manuscripts round out a fascinating collection.
- 11:00 AMTribal Museum (Ekamra Haat) — Adjacent to the State Museum, this outdoor crafts village sells authentic Odia handicrafts directly from tribal artisans. Great for shopping and photography.
- 12:30 PMLunch near the Museum area.
- 2:00 PMNandankanan Zoological Park — Take the 4-seater ropeway over the lake, see the white tigers, and visit the botanical garden. Evening closes at 5 PM so arrive no later than 2 PM.
- 7:00 PMReturn to hotel. Bhubaneswar?s Shahid Nagar and Janpath areas have excellent restaurants. The city is also known for its chhena poda (caramelised cottage cheese dessert) — grab some before you leave!
Golden Triangle: Add Puri & Konark
Bhubaneswar is just the first stop in Odisha's legendary Golden Triangle circuit. After 2 days in the Temple City, travel to Puri (65 km, ~1.5 hrs by train) for beaches, the Jagannath Temple and the village of Raghurajpur. From Puri, take a half-day tour to Konark for the UNESCO Sun Temple. This circuit comfortably fits into a 5-day holiday and gives you three completely different Odisha experiences.
