History of the Sambalpuri Weaving Tradition
The tradition of handloom weaving in the Sambalpur region is believed to be over 500 years old, originating with the Meher/Bhulia weaver communities under the patronage of the Chauhan kings. The technique — known locally as Bandha (a form of double ikat) — is extraordinarily complex: both warp and weft threads are tied and dyed in precise patterns before weaving begins. The weaver must "see" the finished pattern up to 200 thread interactions ahead — a skill that takes years to master.
The Sambalpuri saree received its Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2004, protecting the name and certifying that only textiles made in the Sambalpur-Bargarh-Sonepur region using traditional techniques can carry this designation. In 2023, the saree gained global attention when fashion houses began incorporating Sambalpuri ikat prints in Western silhouettes.
Types of Sambalpuri Sarees
Pasapali
The iconic chessboard-pattern saree. Became globally famous after being worn at a high-profile wedding telecast. The geometric accuracy of the squares — each exactly uniform — is achieved entirely through hand-tying.
Sonepuri (Bomkai)
Named after Sonepur town. Features intricate tribal motifs — fish, temple spires, animals — woven into the border and pallu. The border is woven separately and attached, making each saree a composite artwork.
Barpali Cotton
Softer, everyday cotton sarees from Barpali village near Bargarh. Floral bandha motifs in earthy tones. More affordable — excellent value for daily wear and gift purchases.

How to Spot a Genuine Saree
Look for the "Silk Mark" or "Handloom Mark" label. Turn the saree over: in authentic ikat, the pattern is equally sharp on the reverse. A blurry back indicates machine imitation.
