Konark Tourism 2026: Beyond the Sun Temple

Most visitors to Konark spend a few hours at the famous Sun Temple and leave — but those who linger discover that this small coastal town has considerably more to offer. From a pristine, casuarina-lined beach to a world-class dance festival and a craft tradition that dates back to the temple builders, Konark tourism is richer than most people realise.

Attractions & Things to Do in Konark

Konark Sun Temple (UNESCO WHS)

The 13th-century masterpiece is the centrepiece of any Konark visit. Allow 2–3 hours to fully explore the outer walls of sculpted friezes, the massive stone chariot wheels, and the Natya Mandapa. Early morning or late afternoon light produces the best photographs. Full temple guide →

Must See
Chandrabhaga Beach

Just 3 km from the Sun Temple, Chandrabhaga Beach is one of Odisha's cleanest and least-visited beaches. Named for the Chandrabhaga River that meets the sea here, it hosts a famous beach fair (mela) every January–February. Calm waters make it good for a morning dip.

Konark Archaeological Museum

Located near the Sun Temple, this ASI museum houses impressive sculptures recovered from the temple site — many of extraordinary quality, including rare erotic panels, figures of temple maidens, and fragments of the original tower. Essential for understanding the full scale of the original temple complex.

Konark Dance Festival (December)

One of India?s most prestigious classical dance festivals, held annually from December 1–5 against the floodlit backdrop of the Sun Temple. Top Odissi, Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Manipuri dancers perform on an open-air stage. Tickets are available from Odisha Tourism offices.

Food & Craft

The small market near the Sun Temple entrance is the best place to try Konark?s local craft — stone carvings modelled on the temple?s sculptures are sold here by descendants of the original silpakara (stone sculptor) families. Quality varies enormously, so look carefully; the best pieces can be identified by fine detailing in the hair and fabric folds.

For food, local stalls serve simple Odia staples — puri-sabzi, rice-and-dal, and fresh coconut water. A few basic dhabas near the temple offer decent fish curry and rice at very affordable prices. For a full restaurant meal, most visitors return to Puri (35 km).

Puri–Konark Marine Drive

One of the most scenic coastal drives in India, the Puri–Konark Marine Drive (SH-16) runs 35 km along the Bay of Bengal coast, shaded by casuarina trees. Often called the "Riviera of Odisha," this road passes several peaceful beach spots including Baliharachandi, Ramchandi ghat and Astaranga. Most visitors do this as a self-drive or hired taxi route rather than the faster inland road.
